Wow your students with this completely redesigned Jacob's Ladder. The high voltage, high-frequency power supply, and all electrical connections are completely enclosed. When the power is first turned on, there is a stationary arc between the electrodes. After a few seconds, the heat builds up, causing the arc to rise up between the electrodes.
Once the arc reaches the top, it extinguishes itself, and a new arc forms at the bottom. By aspirating the gas in the column through distilled water, the nitrogen and oxygen that form to combine an oxide of nitrogen can be measured. These oxides are similar to those produced by lightning. |
