This apparatus serves as an excellent introduction to the world of particle physics, providing visual evidence of alpha particles emanating from a mildly radioactive source.

The cloud chamber includes a needle tipped with an alpha particle source, an absorbent base material, and a styrofoam insulating block. When saturated with alcohol and cooled with dry ice, a cloud of alcohol vapor is created in the chamber. If a bright light source is introduced, the curved tracks of alpha particles appear as the condensation of droplets. The cloud chamber is also commonly used to study the randomness of alpha particle emissions as well as the range and kinetic energy of particles.
