Dendrochronology is the study of tree ring dating. By using specially designed simulated tree cores, students develop basic knowledge of the principle of tree ring dating. Students will discover the important effects of climate on living things as they unravel secrets about the age and history of trees through core samples. The climate of a particular year in the distant past can be estimated from a careful study of the annual rings of a tree. Various wooden objects can also reveal the same type of information. Using two different tree core samples, students follow a carefully designed lab activity in which they: 1. Determine the age of the trees 2. Compare wet and dry years and attempt to relate them to chronological events in their life 3. Attempt to establish the year when a piece of lumber was cut and when it started growing 4. Develop a better understanding of the tree-ring dating principles. A highly motivating activity that is easy to perform. It is recommended for all grades, 5 through college. It is designed for 30 students working individually or in teams. It is reusable.
