Flame Test and Emissions Spectroscopy Experiment

Entire concept of spectrum analysis is introduced to the student with this kit. Students spray a fine mist of safe water based solutions of various salts into a Bunsen burner flame and observe the individual spectrum through a hand-held spectroscope. This laboratory procedure is an important step in the analysis of an unknown substance. Kit is ideal for entire class lab activity and needs only Bunsen burners to enable students to conduct the dramatically colorful, spectroscopy experiments. While these results can be observed unaided, students are also asked to examine each flame test with a spectroscope (included). In this way they learn that no two spectrums have an identical color. Students work very effectively as a team with one student spraying a mist solution through a flame and a team-mate observing the spectrum created. Reduction of waste and contamination of chemicals is achieved by the spill-proof spray bottles. Kit contains enough material for 12 lab groups of 2 students each for 2 classes.
