The spectroscope is used to vividly demonstrate the fact that "white" light is composed of many different colors. Light entering the spectroscope is broken into its component colors by passing through a diffraction grating. Each student can assemble their own spectroscope and then compare a variety of different light sources such as incandescent, neon, and fluorescent tubes. The effects of transparent color filters can also be examined.
