How is a family of compounds created by a common functional group? With this kit, students draw "structural formulas" for such "functional groups" as alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, acids and testers. They then construct the corresponding models and see how a 2-dimensional diagram materializes into a 3-dimensional molecule. Students learn the relationship between the diagrams and models as well as how a "family" of compounds is created by a common "functional group". Students receive materials with which they can build their own sturdy models; and in so doing, develop a vivid impression of these invisible units. Twelve separate sets of molecular model components are provided. Each set enables a student, or a team of students, to carry out the lab activity. Kit contains enough material for 12 lab groups of 2 students each for 2 classes.
