They are made for each other. An up-to-date yet simple design of photogate and timer for use with air track gliders and similar timing applications.

The timer has two distinct modes of operation. In mode 1, the first interruption of the beam starts the timing and the next interruption stops the timer. These interruptions may occur on either of the two gates accomodated by the timer.

The total count available is 9.999 seconds in 1 millisecond increments with a crystal controlled accuracy of ± 1 millisecond. The count may be allowed to accumulate on successive starts or returned to zero with the reset button. This mode may also be used tomeasure the period of a pendulum. In mode 2, the timer measures the duration of the interruption at the selected gate. This is useful for computing the speed of a glider by using its measured lenght in the equation of velocity equals distance (lenght of sail) divided by time. The infrared source and detector of the photogate are pre-aligned in a rugged machined housing.
