| A simple, accurate and inexpensive lab activity that illustrates the principles of TLC. These lab techniques involve silica-gel coated plastic slides, indicators, developers and chromatography chambers, and can be performed in a single lab period by students. A perfect solution when you want to illustrate the principles of thin layer chromatography. Each student will run chromatograms of 5 different sample dye solutions in order to establish Rf (Rate of flow) standards and then 2 chromatograms of two "unknowns". The two "unknown" solutions utilized in the lab activity are identified for the teacher in the instruction booklet. This approach gives each student an opportunity to appreciate the usefulness of TLC. The technique, which is similar and complementary to paper chromatography, can also be employed to determine the purity of a system. Kit contains enough material for 12 lab groups of 2 students each to conduct the activity simultaneously. |
